Senator Robert J. Dole

Former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole has been called a “towering figure” and “the most enduring Republican leader of the twentieth century” but he still calls Russell, Kansas, his home.  He founded Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics on Kansas University campus. It was dedicated in July 2003.  It is a
non-partisan forum dedicated to students and public service.  www.doleinstitute.org

Russell High School has the unique claim of having two nationally known U.S. Senators as graduates. Bob Dole and Pennsylvania's Arlen Specter both graduates from Russell High School and both ran for the nation's highest office in 1996.  A time line and memorabilia are on exhibit at Fossil Station Museum.  In addition an exhibit of Dole's early years can be seen at Deines Cultural Center.
